What is a seroma?

A seroma is a pocket of clear (serous fluid) that sometimes forms after surgery, especially when the tissue is removed or manipulated, common after:

-Breast Surgery (mastectomy or lumpectomy)

-Abdominal surgery (tummy tuck or liposuction)

Prevention & Management of Seroma after surgery

Prevention:

  1. Drain Placement: surgeons often place suction drains to remove fluid build up
  2. Compression Garment: Help reduce dead space and limit fluid accumulation
  3. Activity Restriction: Limiting activity as well as bending, twisting movement can help reduce seroma formation.
  4. Surgeons can use a suture technique to close spaces (e.g., quilting sutures) this helps to reduce seroma risk
  5. Small, asymptomatic seroma can resolve on their own
  6. Needle aspiration to drain the fluid
  7. In recurrent cases or infected seroma a drain can be replaced or surgical intervention

Signs you might have a seroma

  1. Swelling near the surgical site
  2. Clear fluid leakage
  3. A soft, sometime lump under the skin that moves like a water ballon
  4. Discomfort or heaviness at the site
